The Raspberry Pi is a very affordable computer, which has been achieved by omitting some parts. Also, for example, an internal clock... The thinking behind this is that the Raspberry Pi would always have internet to retrieve the time.
However, this is not always the case in stand-alone situations. For example, when collecting sensor data. To prevent all times from being set to a default time, it is smart to install this RealTime clock on the Raspberry Pi. The clock chip and battery, together plugged on top of the Pi's GPIO pins, tell the Raspberry Pi what time it is.
